chum-mixer
Park farm pt 4
After a few nice fish during the night and that linear early morning i settle back to feed my empty stomach. Second breakfast, Porridge. Fishing the middle area of the lake paid off well and also allowed me to rest the reeds and tree line on the far bank. Tactics however must continue to be revised if i am to keep converting pickups into fish on the bank. With this in mind i set about cracking out a few more including one that had been eating my bait since i arrived.
bait-making
Bait making ~ Recipes
Back in 1981 when i first started to make bait there was no carbon fibre, no delkims, no big pits, no pods, spods, bolt rigs, hair rigs, boilies, popups there wasn't any of what we now take for granted. We fished for carp the same as we fished for any other species except we stepped up our gear and we were fanatics about bait because that was the key to catching them. Bait was the most important thing, everything depended on your bait no-one talked about anything else. I still feel this way because i have seen it so many times how a really good bait can make it all seem easy. And i have proved this on film with endless carp to my name now. You may think that i am blowing my own trumpet, however it's the importance of bait that i am trying to underline. Become a complete angler and strive to learn everything, especially how to make bait.

The Woolpack lake 8 pt 19
So here we are 19 sessions on, from February through to October with the last session on the Woolpack's lake 8. I did do a few more after this but blanked and we have seen enough of them eh? So lets finish on a good note with all the usual effort put in to make a complete session. This is the last episode of the current series, but i will be back, i still have a few to catch...
chod-rig
First on The Berry 2016
With rain forecast and a low pressure system moving in i took the chance last night for a quick overnighter to test out a batch of The Berry. After 5 minutes with the marker rod the weed growth all over the lake became very evident so i elected to use a chod rig. The 15mm Berry Airball popups stayed up all night long with no loss of buoyancy and would have most likely stayed up considerably longer. This 40 year old common came at 7am, weighing in at 23.8lb it's the first on The Berry for 2016.

Free film download
For some time i have been using this free software for downloading films. It occurred to me recently that this was a much better way of you getting my films than waiting for me. Since the films are already uploaded i really do not need to do all the extra work of uploading to my host and building all the download stuff, its all there already. Visit the webpage and download it. http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/products/dvd/Free-YouTube-Download.htm Make SURE you do a CUSTOM installation and uncheck all the boxes if you dont want other software installed (in fact do this with all software). Happy downloading!
hair-rig
A legend
It's the tenth anniversary today of the passing of a legend, Lenny middleton. Lenny is best know for the invention of the hair rig (see:http://thecarpcatcher.co.uk/thecarpcatchers_blog.php?post=402) but he was also a Taxidermist of some repute and enjoyed fishing in all it's forms. Lenny fished all the famous venues including Savay at the height of it's glory alongside all the other legendary names, he had seen it and done it all. A true sportsman, a gentleman and a fine maker of tea his contribution to carp fishing is immense. So whenever you cast out a hair rig pay a little homage to the man himself because he earned it. Lenny is seen here on Lake 3 with Bertie back in 2005, one of a few he had that afternoon on kit that got thrown out by the dustman, an original hair rig and bait that looked like rubber floor tile! I kid you not, a real master.
river-cam
River Cam Carp Quest 2011 pt 7
Time is the key to everything and as a film maker i can bend it, stretch it and stop it. I can even go back in time. As the poet William Henry Davies once wrote; 'What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare. No time to stand beneath the boughs And stare as long as sheep or cows.' So here we are 5 years on from this day all caught on film live on camera The capture of The Linear from the river Cam, one of my finest moments i think :-)
landbeach-marina
Landbeach Marina park pictures
In the early eighties i discovered a series of gravel pits six miles up the road towards the city of Ely. The place itself was known as Landbeach Marina park but was originally gravel workings that became flooded in the late 1960's. The owners who dug them, Dickersons gravel company turned them into a caravan and camping park in 1979 and stocked the lakes with course fish including a consignment of carp from a company if my memory serves me correct called Four ways fisheries. When i first started to fish it in 1983 the carp had just about reached double figures as indeed had many of the carp had in all the lakes back then. This was the time when carp became widespread in cambridgeshire, a time when the monsters of today were just a few years old. Most of my time on here was spent on the carp lake at the back of the complex stalking the carp with my floater cake. I became very good at it and learned much about carp and their habits. Sadly this lake no longer exists and the fish were moved on (i don't know where). A wonderful series of lakes with some amazing old carp and if it were still there, i'd be fishing it.
1995
A satisfied angler
In 1995 I had a young family so much of my fishing was opportunistic lasting just a few hours and this is the result of one such trip on a sunny July day. I remember the day well and the feeling of complete satisfaction after just a few hours spent alone by it's secluded banks catching this carp. Almost all of these little Fenland pools contain carp such as this, old scaly characters that haven’t grown huge on a diet of boilies but have grown naturally on the food available. How the Carp came to be stocked is anyone's guess but I suspect a combination of stocking by fishing clubs and the occasional flood from the local Lodes (small straight fenland drains) helped the cause. This gem came to free lined floater cake tactics after about an hour of trying to tempt it. Something i learned in my youth at similar little pools and i am sure will stand me in good stead for the rest of my angling days.
