Twitcher hitting
Back in the day... Twitcher hitting! And we still have them today despite our best efforts. How often has you alarm just suddenly gone off with an odd bleep? How often has your bobbin moved up an inch only to immediately settle back? And how often have you put it down to line bites? But what if there is just as much chance of a fish picking up your bait as there is it running into your line? Sure you can screen out the odd bleep when the wind suddenly picks up, but the one thing i have learned over the years is that if the alarm sounds is most likely a fish. I think it's well worth considering the affect this all has on results over a season. I will certainly work on my setup this year to try and iron out any guess work. So when the alarm does sound...

Frisby lakes
It's not often i get to fish a new water so when the chance came along to fish Frisby lakes i wasted no time in getting and invite. Luckily for me i know the new fishery manager Chris Angell who has just taken over so a quick message back and forth set up the session and a few days later i was on my way.
The Woolpack lake 7 - part six
Episode six is the first part of a three night session i did on lake 7 back in August 2016. A rare chance to be on my own on lake seven and an opportunity to see how they react without the usual bombardment under ideal weather conditions. The constant heat and southwesterly winds had been replaced by cooler northwesterlies and even though fish were showing half way up the lake my instinct told me to get on the end of a summer northerly, set my traps and wait.
Map locations
For sometime i have had an App on my site using Google maps but his one is better. As i progress i will add more locations, information, pictures and films. So when you ask me where abouts is the lake i fish? i will be able to send you a link. Easy!

The Woolpack lake 8 - part 12
This week is a little different as we start off as a guest on my mates Jeffs syndicate Virginia lake. I first laid eyes on this water in 1981 when it was on the ARC angling club ticket. I never fished it at the time as the lakes further up the drove had far more carp in them but now that has all changed and this lake is stuffed with carp up to thirty pounds plus. So we start off with an overnighter, a freshly made batch of K-LO popups and boilies and then go on to lake 8.
As swims go this isn't a bad one eh? This is Almatret on the Catalonian side of the river and on the other side your in Aragon. The border at this point runs exactly along the middle of the River Ebro. Spain has what they call autonomous communities which are in themselves nationalities within the Kingdom of Spain much like Wales or Scotland. So if you go to fish in spain then you're most likely going to be fishing in Catalonia or Aragon. And therein lies a problem as they also have unique differences in their language so you dont just need to learn Spanish, you also need to learn some Catalonian at least. However dont fear, English is and has been for centuries one of the most adaptable languages in the world taking on many words from other cultures, so most Spanish speak it! Anyway i digress, back to the swim. Its 307 meters wide and has depths over 11 meters. Old olive groves litter the closer in areas as well as massive boulders, sunken trees and most likely the odd ship or three littered here and there. We get the odd twig floating down river, they get trees and the odd bloated 100lb+ catfish! I kid you not, snaggy isn't the word.
Bait making ~ Recipes
The one thing you always need to make sure of is your bait. If you make it yourself then you could already have an edge that other anglers don't. It's the second most important thing to me after location. This film gives you that edge and more. It details twelve ingredients and seven recipes that will always bring you success. There are plenty of tips too to help you on your way. There are no secrets in carp fishing, only knowledge and here is a big slice of it. You can download all three episodes here
#hair rig
A legend
It's the tenth anniversary today of the passing of a legend, Lenny middleton. Lenny is best know for the invention of the hair rig (see: but he was also a Taxidermist of some repute and enjoyed fishing in all it's forms. Lenny fished all the famous venues including Savay at the height of it's glory alongside all the other legendary names, he had seen it and done it all. A true sportsman, a gentleman and a fine maker of tea his contribution to carp fishing is immense. So whenever you cast out a hair rig pay a little homage to the man himself because he earned it. Lenny is seen here on Lake 3 with Bertie back in 2005, one of a few he had that afternoon on kit that got thrown out by the dustman, an original hair rig and bait that looked like rubber floor tile! I kid you not, a real master.
It would be interesting to know just how many people have caught this fish. In the six years i spent fishing the woolpack's lake #3 i caught it three times and saw it caught twice more. If you have caught Bertie then send me a pic!
