#fully scaled
Fins up fully
Having five days to fish and film on a prolific fishery like Nicholls lake it's no surprise that a few gems turned up. I lost count of the scattered/fully scaled carp i had but i didn't forget the really special catches amongst them and this is one of them. I can only imagine how fantastic this is going to look in another five years when it'll most likely be twice the size.
#that run
On-camera runs
Over the past seven years the rods have fired off a number of times on-camera. The most memorable being 'that run' (see http://thecarpcatcher.co.uk/thecarpcatchers_blog.php?post=160). It's always a dilemma for me as often the camera is just put down in an instant without the thought of filming. I am then faced with the task of moving the camera whilst playing a fish, a precarious past-time for sure. Fish are often dropped when concentration is lost. However i feel it would be nice to get more of this footage in my films. Perhaps it's time to get the tripod out more eh :-)

Valley Pool part five
This film encapsulates all the reasons i love to fish these intimate little pools. You can get close up! This is probably one of the best films i have shot and gives you a wonderful insight into the carp. They are not just fat pigs living in water. They are complex creatures with ways and habits that are as intricate as any other living creature. Carp have developed ways of surviving and this is one of them. Cleaning themselves after their winter layup (see http://thecarpcatcher.co.uk/thecarpcatchers_blog.php?post=163).
#boat fishing
Out in the boat
In the next episode of The woolpack lake 8 we are out in the boat for a snagged up fish. When i was about 15 years old i learned a very useful lesson about boats, they can sink and sink fast! The worse kind are the ones that have no means of floatation other than the ability to displace water, take that away and oh boy do they go down quick. So if your going out in a boat make sure it either has a double skin or floatation built in and always wear a life jacket. Once your out on the boat it all looks and feels a lot different so safety first eh.

The Woolpack lake 7 - part two
With the cold spring and the knowledge that the lake would be busy early on i decided to delay my second visit to Lake 7 until the end of May. Decades of experience has taught me that the carp in early spring don't all become active at the same time. Sure the few that are active can be caught and often quiet quickly. But eventually the blanks start to pile up for everyone as the pressure builds. The bait continues to go in and a surplus occurs so it just gets harder, however as the water warms there comes a point when all the carp are active. It's at this moment your chances improve and it's time to pack the car.

Bivvy Tramps
Who are your top five carpers of all time? How about top five carp captures, or even better, top five bivvy babes? Join Kes and his camo-clad mates in Tommy's Tackle shop to sort out the important carp questions of the day. Kes has been a camper far too long, but he's determined to prove himself by catching the Fat Lady from St Ives Lagoon. Lying on his narrow-boat bunk he dreams of being an X-treme carper, tackling rock hard waters like Fen Drayton and Wraysbury. Unfortunately his plans are put on hold when he gets involved with a new ultra commercial carp fishery, and caught up in a whole lot of trouble with bunny huggers, and the worst Ouse valley flood in living memory. Author Martin Lawrence brings the carp world of Kes and his mates to vivid life in this imaginative fenland tale of camaraderie, dreams, opinions, car boot sales, heavy metal, carp captures, antis and disaster. This totally original book will quickly find a cult following from the legions of carpers who share Kes's aspirations and love of carp fishing. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bivvy-Tramps-Martin-Lawrence/dp/1871700825/ref=aag_m_pw_dp?ie=UTF8&m=AUTN9R1ZEQUDF

Twitcher hitting
Back in the day... Twitcher hitting! And we still have them today despite our best efforts. How often has you alarm just suddenly gone off with an odd bleep? How often has your bobbin moved up an inch only to immediately settle back? And how often have you put it down to line bites? But what if there is just as much chance of a fish picking up your bait as there is it running into your line? Sure you can screen out the odd bleep when the wind suddenly picks up, but the one thing i have learned over the years is that if the alarm sounds is most likely a fish. I think it's well worth considering the affect this all has on results over a season. I will certainly work on my setup this year to try and iron out any guess work. So when the alarm does sound...
#breaching carp
Breaching carp
We often see carp breaching and rolling. Rolling often indicates feeding whereas breaching can have nothing to do with feeding. In this still from the film this big twenty mirror carp breached, it was not feeding as it was on the surface and it did this three times in succession! What was really interesting though is what they were all doing together before this happened... ...all on film and its eye opening and stunning!
