This is a still from the first episode of next series The woolpack lake 8. It's a Carp on the surface in the first week of april and is the result of the precursors i had seen most of the day. Fish boiling in the margins and out in the middle of the lake over thirteen feet of water. At first i thought it was Pike as they do tend to get active in the spring but no it was Carp. Perhaps i thought Pike despite all my previous experiences at this time of year simply because you dont expect it. But they live in the aqueous stuff and they know how to find warmer water just like i did skinny dipping as a kid. You just swim around until you find it or it's where you expect it to be. Some of you will no doubt be screaming 'Get the Zigs out!'. But i dont suspend baits over three feet because of the danger of foul hooking preferring to find a margin, around the same depth if possible, however a fly rod and a bug might have come in handy.
