Abbey lake 2007
The greatest passion
Over the last month I've been going once a week to Crystal lakes. Usually mid-week because of all the weekend action and it's been interesting to see how the carp have been behaving and responding to my tactics.
So first off a little about the depths and features of Crystal lake. It's shaped like a tooth, a main body (top of the tooth) and two bays (the tooth roots) forming a peninsula in the middle which you can fish from. The deepest part of the lake (in the main body) is around 32 feet depending on water level, this area is the size of a tennis court. The lake then slopes up and into the two bays which are shallower.
Three weeks ago temperatures were much higher and I found the fish to be more spread out when I used my Deeper fish-finder. Also they would be layered with a few near or on bottom and the rest up to 12 feet off bottom in the deeper part. Around 1-2 PM in the afternoon they would start rolling over the deeper water, this would then spread out. They mostly concentrated on the sloping shelves at around 20-25 feet and the deeper 32 feet area. Once the rolling slowed up bites would come.
I found that if I introduced a good patch of bait at the right depth at this time I'd get a bite pretty quickly, but only the one, I'd have to move that rod and start over (same depth just further along the shelf) for another bite.
Using the Deeper as I have has allowed me to see how almost the entire population of carp in the lake has shoaled up tightly, with only the odd fish (feeding) spotted elsewhere in the last three weeks. If you had fished anywhere else on that lake at that time other than the tennis court you would have most likely blanked.
