The Woolpack lake 7 - part five
It's my first week using my new Trakker Tempest brolly something i have been wanting to sort for a some time. Weather for the week is westerlies and sunshine and the swim choice is the south bank giving me a great view of the lake as well as a chance to fish the exit of the drainage channel and put a bait near the sanctuary of the southwest corner. The lake has just opened after a six week break for spawning and so has been very busy with plenty of pressure on the fish so i am expecting it to be tough.

The Woolpack lake 7 - part three
The winds are still pushing in from the north so a swim on the south bank is required however that's not to be at the start of the session. This week i move into a new swim, find the spots, defeat the seagulls and get to see a few of these old warriors show themselves over my bait. A tense few hours waiting for a run ensues...

Plenty of action
Tomorrow see's the release of the third and last episode of Nickolls lake ~ Hythe 2015. As with the previous two episodes there is plenty of action throughout the film plus all the info on the rigs used and the lead setup that has been so successful for me in the last few years and has now accounted for numerous fish. More than once in this episode i catch two at once plus of course the icing on the cake, that 28lb common. Hopefully i will be returning in march to fish again but until then, hasta la vista baby.

First on The Berry 2016
With rain forecast and a low pressure system moving in i took the chance last night for a quick overnighter to test out a batch of The Berry. After 5 minutes with the marker rod the weed growth all over the lake became very evident so i elected to use a chod rig. The 15mm Berry Airball popups stayed up all night long with no loss of buoyancy and would have most likely stayed up considerably longer. This 40 year old common came at 7am, weighing in at 23.8lb it's the first on The Berry for 2016.

A real Gem
It gets busy on lake 7 early in the year so i delayed my first visit until this week. However when i arrived at the lake almost all the swims on the West bank were taken so i opted to walk the East bank with my water bottle, and try and find a swim that gave me the most clear water. For a while i was torn between two swims out of a possible four choices but i eventually settled in a swim in the south east corner. The wind was blowing from the North west straight into the area i was in but would be moving to the south south-west. In the final twenty-four hours it would be moving back to the North west. Despite the rain temperatures stayed up giving me the confidence to keep feeding the spots, building them up over the session and wait for the turn in the wind. On the last night it turned and i had a nice carpet of bait out from 1-3 days old lying in wait. Just before first light on the last morning the right hand rod ripped off with this 31.6lb common on the end, as my good friend Martin Lawrence said, a real Gem and a great way to start my year. Successful setup was my semi-fix-running-rig, my standard fluorocarbon bottom-bait-rig with a 18mm K-LO Hard hooker.

The Woolpack lake 7 - part four
It's the last week of May 2016 and the weather is in a downturn with cold wet driving northerly winds day and night. When i arrived I counted plenty of cars in the car park so i knew it was going to be tough getting a swim on the wind and a walk around the lake soon revealed little option. Now it's at times like these when you think your chances of a fish are small that you must push on. Places like lake seven are not easy prospects and you need to spend as much time on the lake learning as you can. So even if a session looks like a write off, you must still go. Remember if it was just about catching fish it wouldn't be called fishing.

Fluoro K-LO
Something that's been missing from my bait box recently are these, fluoro popups. What with getting the full range of The Berry sorted it slipped my mind and now of course is when i need them the most. The weather over the last six weeks has been hot with days when there isn't a breath of wind and it's at times like these that an inquisitive bite can get you that bonus fish. So with the weather looking like it's going to continue hot they're sure to get used. You can get them here http://thecarpcatcher.co.uk/bait-k-lo.php

The Woolpack lake 8 - part 18
After a hectic weekend at work it's good to get away to the quiet of my mid-week session, however when i arrive this week i find the lake busy. With little choice I slot myself into a swim that has produced previously and setup. With the much shorter days, northwesterlies blowing in cooling air temperatures, time is running out and they will soon switch off. It's the second week of October, and we could be on our last few sessions.

Fishing at your best
You know when you're fishing at your best and it's not just the results that indicate it but the feeling you get. My recent trip to Linfords Alder lake was typical of this feeling and so is this film. 'You only get one life' has been available for download now for a year. If you haven't already purchased it then you're missing out! One of those dream sessions and waters where everything flows to the inevitable result, an amazing fish in the back of the net.
