The Woolpack lake 7 - part two
With the cold spring and the knowledge that the lake would be busy early on i decided to delay my second visit to Lake 7 until the end of May. Decades of experience has taught me that the carp in early spring don't all become active at the same time. Sure the few that are active can be caught and often quiet quickly. But eventually the blanks start to pile up for everyone as the pressure builds. The bait continues to go in and a surplus occurs so it just gets harder, however as the water warms there comes a point when all the carp are active. It's at this moment your chances improve and it's time to pack the car.

I need a carp dog!
When fishing Pingels pool back in 2009 i got to make friends with 'Punch'. He lived in the house across the lake but wandered all the drains, dykes, pools and rivers in the entire area for miles and many anglers had come across him. This year i have promised myself to get one. It'll be called 'Walker', which is apt eh ;-)

The Woolpack lake 7 - part one
As much as anything else, getting out early season is good for the spirits. After what always seems like a long cold winter the world is once again waking up and the days are lengthening. The air is alive with birdsong, the suns rays are ever warmer and the feeling of being alive and out there is intense. It's like a rebirth, a chance to start over again, a brand new year just ready and waiting.

A passion for angling
Probably the best films ever made about fishing. I have to say that i was inspired by these films as i am sure everyone who watched them was. I still watch them now and then, they never age.

Chin stroker
Four minutes into part 12 of The Woolpack lake 8 and i start talking about bait and it brought on some right old chin stroking i can tell you. I had just made a fresh batch of 18mm popups containing a sample of hydrolysed krill protein concentrate and i was using these alongside an early batch of K-LO. I was confident the bait would work and indeed i had one within ten minutes but as always with bait you're never quite satisfied, you always want to improve. Do a quick search for chin stroking on the internet you will come up with something like 'Stroking the chin is often a signal that the person is thinking hard. They may well be judging or evaluating something, particularly if the conversation has offered them a choice or decision to make'. S'true, grow a beard, make decisions ;-)
#lake 2
Effort = Success
My days on the woolpack were full of fun and fish. I did well too landing most of the know residents and few of the lesser caught ones as well. Often when fishing lake #3 i fished with only two rods and put the third rod behind me on lake #2. This rod caught me a number of the residents and all from within a few feet of the bank. This episode has become one of my most popular because of 'that run'. Happy days

TheCarpCatcher Bait
The second most important thing after location as far as i am concerned is bait, it is after all what you put in front of the fish to catch it. My faith in bait is as strong as my passion for it and if i didn't have total confidence in my bait then i wouldn't use it, it's that simple. So this year see's the start of TheCarpCatcher Bait and hopefully it will prosper. At the moment the field testers are getting the chance to get some of the initial batch from the manufacturer and as always their voluntary feedback is always welcome. Last years test went amazingly well and there will be more on the way. The Berry needs developing and testing with it's new format. Then there is Ultimate Fish Mix a culmination of everything that is awesome in a fishmeal bait basically :-) Popups and Bait soaks to develop and test too plus all sorts of other things to give us that confidence and edge that we all want over our fishy foe. If you want to apply to become a field tester for TheCarpCatcher Bait then follow the link, cheers. http://thecarpcatcher.co.uk/notifications.php

Valley Pool part sixteen
So here we are on the last episode of Valley pool, for the time being. As usual i turn up and have a look around but this time i also have a plan. To fill in the middle of the lake and see what happens.

Pushing the limits
This picture was taken in 1991, that's my son Marcus who is now 25 years old wearing my hat. As you can see i started fishing with my rods up over 25 years ago now so it's not something that's new to me.Things like this can be just fashion of course but as i said a few posts ago i consider using the the rod setup also as part of the trap by enabling the rig and the lead system to perform differently. Just recently over the last few sessions i have been pushing this to the limit and with some astonishing success. However as with anything you push to the limit you always find the edge and so have i. So this week i will be taking all that i have learned through my successes as well as my mistakes and dialing it back a bit, fine tuning it. This for me is what fishing is really all about, finding a method, getting it to work and hopefully bagging a few before it all changes.
