By mid april of this year I still hadn't sorted out a place to fish and as ever time was running out. Surprisingly after almost forty years carping there are still some waters not too far from me that for one reason or another I have never fished, The Gault lake is one of them.
It was back in 1982 whilst fishing around the Fens that I learned about it for the first time. Even though it interested me I was consumed by more local waters and as the years went on it slipped to the back of my mind. Then this year a chance reply to a comment I made on a club page lead me to start thinking of it again. So the next day I decided to take a trip over and have a look see and boy was I taken with the place. It wasn't anything like I imagined and as I walked around the feeling of just wanting to fish the place began to take hold.
The lake is 20 acres and was dug back in the 1700-1800's for it's Gault clay (a waterproof clay used for lining the Fen drains). It's an SSSI and as such cannot be altered to suit comfort which means it has some of the most difficult paths and swims going (wonderful!). The Carp are not the dominant species bream are and the skimmers can easily swallow an 18mm boilie. At least a third of the bank space available cannot be fished from and many of the swims will not take a bivvy leaving you with a very precarious trip down the bank to your rods when needed.
To an angler who bivvies up it's a bit of a mare but to an angler who is prepared to travel very light, the skies the limit.
There is so much more to tell you about this wonderful lake but I have only just begun myself and as you can see, I have managed one already!

Note:'The Gault lake' is not the lakes real name as there is a no publicity rule on name and location.
